The collection consists of publications, articles, ephemera, and Whiteford's personal notes relating to Semana Santa, or Holy Week. Most of the materials pertain to Holy Week in Spain (predominantly Málaga), however, some of the articles and publications relate to Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, and the Yaqui Indians in Arizona.

Andrew Hunter Whiteford was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1913. He came to the United States in 1923 and was naturalized in 1928. He received his B.A. from Beloit College, Wisconsin (1937), and his M.A. and Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in 1943 and 1950, respectively. Whiteford worked as an anthropologist and archaeologist in various parts of Latin America, the United States, and Europe.
